Race City Rebels sharpen skills on Butchers

The only men’s roller derby league in Indiana scores a win on Saturday

The Race City Rebels finished their season with a bang, posting a decisive win against the Cowtown Butchers of Kansas City. Coming in strong, and skating hard, the Rebels were able to take the lead and dominate the game, leading to a final score of 372 to 22.

The Butchers, a young team of overwhelmingly new skaters, put their best foot forward against the Rebels, but were never able to gain momentum against the Indianapolis team. Indy’s Rebels scored early, taking the lead from the very first jam.

“This was a good learning experience,” said Jason Scoorhees (13), Butchers’ bench coach. “Hopefully the Rebels were as impressed with our heart as we were with their skating skills. We look forward to beating them next time.”

Although the Butchers’ primary jammers Polish HIT-Man (22) and Polish Sausage (20) skated hard and gave their all, massive hits from the Rebels’ defensive line sent them into the crowd more than once, making it difficult to gain ground. Effective walls and strategy bogged down the Butchers’ skaters, holding the team to very few scoring runs and fewer scoring power jams.

“Tonight was a great example of playing our game and playing the basics we've been working on all year,” said veteran Rebels skater Westside Slam (59). “The Rebels went out there on a mission and executed very well. We love playing the Butchers. They are derby. The passion they have for promoting the sport, playing the sport and having fun doing it is awesome.”

The Rebels chose to use a broad roster of jammers Saturday, with many of the skaters taking a turn with the star. While Master B (25) posted the highest jam score, racking up 30 points in a two minute period, Mathlete (33) was responsible for the largest number of points, accumulating 73 over the course of the game.

Team co-captains Ron Scaremy (71) and DV Ant (17) agreed the game was a great opportunity for newer skaters to get bouting experience and to test out strategies they've been working on in practice. “Watching our skaters tonight, the future of the Rebels is bright.” said DV Ant, “I’m proud of our newer skaters, they performed well, and all our guys played their best.”

The bout was bittersweet, with both teams skating in memory of Butchers’ skater Expresso, who passed away earlier this year. Rebels’ skater Westside Slam (59) was also skating his final game, having announced his retirement earlier in the season.

“I’ve loved playing for the Rebels,” said Westside Slam (59). “They’re an amazing group of skaters who continually challenge each other on the track. I'm always amazed at how much better I have become because of that challenge. It's such a privilege to play this sport and an honor to skate with these guys.”

Although the final score left Butchers fans disappointed, it was the positive attitude of both teams that made this a game to watch. “Every time you get knocked down, you get back up,” said Butchers skater Beaver Cleaver (1981), who was awarded Best Blocker. “The pain doesn’t mean anything, because I love this sport.”

Fan were also treated to Naptown Roller Girl action as the Third Alarm faced off against the Rubber City Roller Girls in the double-header’s opening game. Penalty trouble plagued both teams, keeping the score Rubber City 64, Naptown 23 in the first half. Rubber City came out rejuvenated in the second half, shutting down Naptown’s effort, taking the game 142 - 46.

The Race City Rebels have completed their home season, and are looking for a few good men to join them on skates for next season. A recruiting camp will be held at the Forum at Fishers on Saturday, August 7 from 3 to 6.
